Orange Red Blue Landscape

The juicy contrast of the red and blue will always catch my gaze. As a kid, I found optical illusions interesting. Some of the illusions would trick my eye into seeing motion. The illusion of motion was result of red and blue contrast adjacent to each other in patterns. Lifting the foreground to the middle ground, if I had to do it again, I would break the surface into the background to create more imaginary depth. Tense black contrast against the orange with trails of red and blue. PINK NICK DRAKE

Pink Moon by Nick Drake is one of my most favorite songs. The imagery fills my head with colors I've never seen in the wild. He was gone too quick. Pink, repetition, trails over the foliage aside the path. Imagine two of these pieces, created by two different people, who didn't know each other at the time, where they both chose the same palette, with the same background and similar gestural fluid drips and scattered dots. What would be the chances? The sequential dots in an arc tell the tale of time as my hand drops the liquid drips. Melded together in a clump of liquid, the pigments fuse and move in a slow current until the water is evaporated. If I could do it again, I would. Never be the same though. Variations will always triumph. Ever throw things out of fun or aggravation? Taking the fluid and spraying it with force from the dripping brush, oh, so fun. The movement of the arm, the expressive force. Just one more time. Give it a try, I say, try it. A wet un-primed canvas acts like watercolor paper, letting the pigment flow where the current takes it. Upon the layers, throwing paint, hoping not to miss its bulls-eye, I watch it transform. My emotions take over and I have to paint to find my center, otherwise I might. Things happen with a response that just can't sit still, must scratch into the surface to reveal, must let the universe know that it is not ok with me, in that the color, lines, and characters must continue in peace. Triptych Pollock Landscape III

Do you know what a mono-print is? It's not a reproduction, it is totally an original. In sum, take one piece of wet painted art and push it against another piece. Now do that with three pieces, and I call it a tri-print. Throwing spots of paint here and there, then pushing one piece against two others and so forth until all the layers are melded. Throwing paint all over the floor, watching it drip, checking out the spatters, what a meditation to be in the state of Jackson Pollock. Glazing translucent hue upon the negative space, finding shapes out of constructed chaos, there is nothing like it. It's wonderful to experience, and if you ever get a chance to throw paint around, I highly recommend it. The energy is builds upon the layers, and it infuses your spirit. Ripped off its stretcher and rolled for transport, I lef

Circular shapes turn into spherical forms. One of my first lessons with a still life in sixth grade with a powerful light casting shadow for me to interpret on paper, I still remember hesitating. Wondering how I could make the illusion of the still life happen on paper. Waiting for my instructor to turn the corner and check out my work. Confidence built over the years, thankfully, and whether I get it right is not so much the purpose as is am I having an curiously-filled expe

Circular Red Gear Jazz

Back at #SCAD, my color theory professor asked us to paint one of the movements of Beethoven. Listening to the music, I would draw symbols and repetitive patterns according to the melody or the musical instrument being played. Fast forward and now I listen to jazzy stuff, creating whimsy in my patterns and color palette. "Circular Red Gear Jazz" is from my painted series of geometric shapes and patterns. Translucent layer after layer of hues create a layer of color impossible to mix upon a palette. Waiting a month or so between layers, adding another with sgraffito-ed patterns, the progress of this piece was slow, but so interesting to see unfold. Still I hear the music of the piece, in jazz, blocked with rectangles. To make a big canvas from this small study, oh, wouldn't that be fun to create! Carolina Blue Jazz

The favorite part of my day is to use the leftover paint and swash it over a dried background with shapes and patterns to create a unified composition. The line-work is tighter than expressionism, and still it has impromptu gestures. Without thinking, letting the creative muse work out the details, it's just glorious to watch it happen through my arm. It's almost like I'm not even there creating it, just observing its creation. Watch and learn, it says. Three more layers and

Pendulum Abstract Jazz

The four-facing clock kept time with the effort of a pendulum. When the air was really quiet, you could hear the slicing of the metal engine with a slight woosh from the swinging the the pendulum. Poe's story with that swinging object, still haunts me evermore. The technique that I used to paint is secondary to capturing the frozen moment in time, pun intended. En plein air, I sat on the sidewalk to study the clock's pendulum, with a paintbrush, palette and easel. Passerby's

Monochromatic illustrations show the true test of craftsmanship. Showcase your understanding of the elements of design using your skills in pushing and pulling contrast plus considering the width, gesture, application of line-work. Contrast in value is missing in this piece to which the end result is passively unified. Peeking into the details, the geometrics are there and so is the expressive nature of application. Pueblo Mustard Jazz

The color of the dirt from Pueblos inspires this geometric jazz piece of art. Other pieces in the series have tight line-work versus this pice where the gestural movement showcases my emotions in a manner of abstract expressionism. Quickly pushing and pull the paint over layers, some the impatience is clearly seen when the color mixes upon the canvas because the painted layers were not yet dry. Upon seeing the horizon of Denver lights at night from a mountain top, I re-create
