A wet un-primed canvas acts like watercolor paper, letting the pigment flow where the current takes it. Upon the layers, throwing paint, hoping not to miss its bulls-eye, I watch it transform. Thanks again to drips and dripping and fluid pigment. Rectangular Red Jazz

Translucent layer after layer of hues create a layer of color impossible to mix upon a palette. Waiting a month or so between layers, adding another with sgraffito-ed patterns, the progress of this piece was slow, but so interesting to see unfold. Still I hear the music of the piece, in jazz, blocked with rectangles. To make a big canvas from this small study, oh, wouldn't that be fun to create! Carolina Blue Jazz

The favorite part of my day is to use the leftover paint and swash it over a dried background with shapes and patterns to create a unified composition. The line-work is tighter than expressionism, and still it has impromptu gestures. Without thinking, letting the creative muse work out the details, it's just glorious to watch it happen through my arm. It's almost like I'm not even there creating it, just observing its creation. Watch and learn, it says. Three more layers and

Pendulum Abstract Jazz

The four-facing clock kept time with the effort of a pendulum. When the air was really quiet, you could hear the slicing of the metal engine with a slight woosh from the swinging the the pendulum. Poe's story with that swinging object, still haunts me evermore. The technique that I used to paint is secondary to capturing the frozen moment in time, pun intended. En plein air, I sat on the sidewalk to study the clock's pendulum, with a paintbrush, palette and easel. Passerby's

Monochromatic illustrations show the true test of craftsmanship. Showcase your understanding of the elements of design using your skills in pushing and pulling contrast plus considering the width, gesture, application of line-work. Contrast in value is missing in this piece to which the end result is passively unified. Peeking into the details, the geometrics are there and so is the expressive nature of application. Pueblo Mustard Jazz

The color of the dirt from Pueblos inspires this geometric jazz piece of art. Other pieces in the series have tight line-work versus this pice where the gestural movement showcases my emotions in a manner of abstract expressionism. Quickly pushing and pull the paint over layers, some the impatience is clearly seen when the color mixes upon the canvas because the painted layers were not yet dry. Upon seeing the horizon of Denver lights at night from a mountain top, I re-create

Aztec Geometric Jazz

In 1997 I reached the Northwest coast once again. My studio was about the size of a walk-in closet with tall walls to paint the large canvas. The palette was inspired by a visit to the Southwest with all the Native American hues and tones, pulled from the earth. Six circular faces in unity are all connected with curves and patterns. This piece has travelled the continent several times back and forth now, exhibited in a few places, and though not literally glued to my side, I

Yellow Kachina Jazz

In 1992, I designed the informational audio cassette and compact disc insert of "In the Spirit of Crazy Horse: Songs For Leonard Peltier" a CD produced by Four Winds Trading Company, seller of Native American Music, Books & Video. For the next decade or so, I studied indigenous cultures from around the world. One of my favorite experiences from Four Winds was when I met Micky Hart who produced "Planet Drum" a world music album. Mickey Hart was a member of the rock band the Gr

Blue Navajo Jazz

The rhythm, pattern and palette are key to the geometric jazz series. I loved my green one so much that I had to do it again with a blue one. The art collector acquired both this blue one and the upcoming yellow one. I'll have to create another few, because it's inside of me, and I just can't move along daily without thinking about it. I'll listen to some music and just start swirling the paint along with the rhythm of the music. What sort of music? House, jazz, classical, St

Green Mechanical Jazz

The painting was displayed in the film "Mr. & Mrs. Christmas" an independent production in Vancouver. The stretched canvas was so big, I had to borrow a friend's car for delivery to the production office. When I left Canada, another friend helped me tear it away from its stretcher to roll into a transportable unit that would fit in my car. On the east coast, another friend helped me by building a new wooden stretcher for it. It's heavy duty now. It's great to have friends. I

Geek Exhibit Delta Optimist

The painting was on exhibit at the Geeks in Delta after the exhibit at the arts centre. It's one of my favorite pieces with all the variations of greens. Of course the inspiration again was Boundary Bay with the distant Cascade mountains on the horizon. I pushed and pulled the wet on wet paint, in a Sgraffito manner. Usually my energy is so dang excited to get the layering done, before the acrylic has a chance to dry. Though when it does, then happily I'll dry-brush the dry f

The inspiration from this painting came from a photograph taken by a dear friend. The amber waves of grain, the slabs of color blankets atop one another, the rows of ecosystems, I have painted it over and over. There is another layer missing in this horizonatal composition, you'll see it in my other versions. Polyurethane Protection of Boundary Bay

Experimentation is so fun. Water and Oil can be shaken to mix, then then they always separate. Attempt at glazing. The oil in the polyurethane stuck with the pigment of the acrylic but separated over top the bottom layer. The curiosity. How and why these molecules bond? This sort of resin needs to be applied outdoors where the fresh air will protect you. I'd love to varnish with non-toxic materials, so if you know of any... please drop me a line, dm the info if you can. Today

Jackson Grid

The basement became my studio where I could throw paint around like Jackson Pollock. Abstract Expressionism is one of my favorite ways to express my joy and excitement. To just go with the flow, splish and splash the liquid color, moving my arm and body in big circles and haphazardly ending up with a piece of artwork not easy to duplicate in both progression and completion. To me, this piece ends up looking like a fuse box with electricity whirling zaps around the breakers.

Motherboard

Remember the Tandy computers? CPU processors with circuit boards, pins, cables. In order to print on paper, I had to write the code, 90 LPRINT CHR$(98), etc. One time in computer class, I wrote the code for a random number generator to start a chess game. When MacIntosh's WYSIWYG (pronounced "wizzy-wig") came out, my interest grew exponentially. All that coding was too tedious, instead I wanted to see things move with a drag and drop. Fast forward to today, I still use the Ge

Artists' interpretations may change over time. I found a artist's rendering of the solar system in movement not circling the sun in a heliocentric manner, but spiraling in a trail behind it. All interstellar objects in our solar system were spiraling behind the sun as it was clearly moving forward with a trail of planets behind it, caught in the irresistible force of gravity from the sun. Forbes magazine says it's incorrect, and non-scientific. Here is the link if you are in

Shore

To reach the other side, we had to step on plywood, or else we would sink to our knees in mud. The tide would go out more than one mile it seemed. Found a quote on the internet, "You can walk on soft sand for miles when the tide is out and the water is warm through September for swimming." All I know for sure is that a whale is buried there. When the tide was out, the machinery stepped in to dig the deepest hole possible for the whale to rest in peace under the ever watching

Siobhan's Emerald Forest

The forest full of life with animals bouncing around like tiggers. The path to sunlight is above the tree canopy, only reached by the birds and squirrels. Grizzlies leave their prints in the mud, fungus drips with condensation, water ripples nearby over the salmon's rock obstacles. The growth is older than me. The painting is circa 20 years old today. Still see the forest edge across the halfmoon bay filled with anchors, geese and kayaks. Siobhan's Emerald Forest My Green Bra

Winter

Winters were long in Canada. They started in August and ended in July. Nah, not really. Everything is relative. In comparison to the Southern U.S., it might be true to say so. In August, sometimes I wore my winter coat in Vancouver. In December, some days were nice enough to wear a T-shirt on a hike in the sunshine. When it did snow, the flakes dropped in chunks, like puffy cotton balls. The composition of the snow was wet, perfect for slapping together snowballs or digging o
