This painting depicts Buckingham Palace, the iconic royal residence in London, with a vivid and expressive style. The artist uses a bold and vibrant color palette dominated by shades of pink, purple, and magenta, giving the scene a dreamlike and surreal quality.

The intricate iron gates at the foreground are painted in black, contrasting sharply with the bright background, and are adorned with gold accents, adding a regal touch. The palace façade is detailed with classical architectural elements, such as columns and windows, while the texture of the brushstrokes adds depth and energy to the composition. The lampposts and the Union Jack flying above the palace add to the sense of place and historical significance.

The overall impression is dynamic and modern, with the textured, layered paint creating a sense of movement and vitality. The choice of colors and techniques suggests a departure from realism, focusing instead on evoking emotion and artistic interpretation.

Between 1847 and 1849, the East Wing was added at the front, enclosing what had previously been an open, horseshoe-shaped courtyard and introducing the famous central balcony. A lot of detail went into the gate, but I had to get the background of the building done first. There is no way to paint the gate and then put the background in the building. It just wouldn’t work. It would’ve been too messy and turned into mud. And oh, I love the texture in the sky, hinting at the random drippy swirls of Jackson Pollock.
