We stayed at The Plaza Hotel when I was a teen with our exchange student from France. She was staying with our family for the summer. We took her to the big apple to see all the sights. My memory of being there is exciting so I painted the scene bold vivid color. I captured the reference photo on another one of my excursions throughout New York City. Starting with a textured abstract background, I drew contour lines for the shapes, choosing the vanishing point in the center for perspective. The cluster of skyscrapers above the hotel create a bold frame encasing the Plaza.
The French Renaissance-inspired château style hotel opened in 1907 and was designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh. The Plaza Hotel is rendered in warm pinks, oranges, and yellows, with its distinctive green roof and ornate architecture standing out against a deep blue sky. The surrounding cityscape, including modern glass buildings and towering skyscrapers, is depicted with an array of purples, reds, and blues, creating a striking contrast. The reflective surfaces of the buildings shimmer with abstract reflections, adding movement and depth to the scene. The perspective leads the viewer's eye down a central road, giving the impression of depth and urban dynamism. The use of bold, expressive strokes and bright, unconventional colors enhances the painting’s impressionistic and almost Fauvist style, making the city feel both familiar and surreal. Lisa Bisbee’s signature in the bottom left corner completes this lively and evocative interpretation of one of New York City's most iconic landmarks.
